Original artwork description:

This piece was a real departure and I can’t conjure why or how it came about. I had little faith in where it was going as I continued to cut, file and sand. As I applied the final touches and chemically introduced the finish it seemed to, not only come to life as a startlingly powerful piece of sculpture, but also soothed my angst that I had wasted a whole lot of time and in particular… energy working on Detroit. Detroit was a challenge.

All of my sculptures are made out of wood (Cedar). They are intended to be place in an interior environment only. My sculptures are photographed both inside & outside. The interior shots are intended to give the viewer a sense of what my work would look like in an interior setting. The exterior shots were important to give the viewer a more accurate sense of color and texture without distracting shadows and very good natural light.

I have always had an affinity for creating with wood. Over the years I've restored 10 properties. Several were historic. One is listed on the National Registry of Historic Structures. I've also built wooden boats. My career was dedicated to teaching studio art at three different colleges over a period of 44 years. I've exhibited in NYC, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Florence Italy, Liverpool England, and numerous museums and galleries throughout the US. Creating challenging provocative work has been a life long goal. I consider myself a process artist. My that I mean... I enjoy making the work. After that I basically leave it in the hands of the gods.

Detroit is finished with three coats of steel impregnated paint, then sprayed with an activator... magically turning the surface in to a completely convincing appearance of rusted steel.

The base of the sculpture fits easily into the 18" slotted base. The base is shipped separately.
