Original artwork description:

“Derwentwater” is an acrylic on canvas painting 90cmsHx120cmsWx3cmsD . It is stretched on a custom made wooden stretcher with steel corner braces. (Please see photographs)
The painting is inspired by a series of photographs taken in Summer 2021 of reflections of light on the waters seen on the English Lakes in Cumbria U.K. Following some small colour studies made from close up sections of the photographs the painting developed into a stylised interpretation of light and colour reflected onto the lake. Although the focus of the painting relates to the reflections of light on water, it can also be seen as a semi-abstract colour composition.
Derwentwater is a large and long lake in the north lake district. The town of Keswick sits on the lake’s northern edge. The viewpoint is from the park on the shore of the lake. I could quite happily live there. A most beautiful location. I’m fascinated by the natural beauty of the detail in our world. The way light and colour effect how we see and understand our environments. It’s difficult to focus on such detail in this busy world which is why I enjoy the time I can spend alone just walking, looking, listening and painting in clam places. My paintings are about atmospheres. I build my paintings in layers of thin, transparent washes of colour combined with and overworked with impasto applications. I use brushes, knives and cloths. I let the paint take its own course. I like the process of painting, so I purposefully leave in the traces of its behaviour such as the marks of knife and brush and the stream and trickle of diluted pigment. I respect and work with the nature of paint. I also use crackle paste to bring textural qualities to the painting. I am continually inspired by modernists and colourists Barbara Rae, Howard Hodgkin and John Hoyland. I look to the Impressionists to enjoy their visual responses to light and colour.
The painting is shipped in a custom heavy duty cardboard crate.
