Original artwork description:

I was 18 before I saw the ocean for the first time. I had gone away to school on Long Island and a bunch of the “upstaters” skipped class one warm October day and headed for the beach. I was really struck seeing the flat horizon where the water met the sky.
The water was freezing but it was one of the most refreshing swims I’ve ever had.
When I saw the blue umbrella, it reminded me of that brilliant day in October.
