As soon as I found the reference photo for 'Circe' I knew I had to paint her, she just seemed to pull me immediately in. The moodiness of the sky contrasting with the light touching the tips of the ripples in her waters, it is everything I love about a seascape painting. I wanted to create a sense of foreboding as if a storm is about to appear and disrupt the peaceful waters wreaking havoc to the peace that was just there moments ago.
She is named after 'Circe' in greek Mythology, she was an enchantress who enticed odysseus and his men onto her Island with food and song but then went on to hold them captive for a year. This is what I hoped the painting feels like, drawing the viewer in, longing to be there, in the scene, not knowing how long they're staying for.
