Original artwork description:

Mildly Interesting Fact Of The Day: the etymology of the word ‘font’ - meaning type-written characters of a particular style - and the word ‘fondue’ - meaning to cook with cheese and wine - is the same. The French word ‘fondre’ comes from the Latin ‘fundere’ meaning to melt. What is mind boggling about this is the fact that the Swiss are world leaders in both disciplines. Early type was made from pouring melted metal into moulds, and manipulating typefaces is a uniquely Swiss speciality (see: Josef Müller-Brockmann, Wolfgang Weingart et al). Early cheese fondue also contained eggs but from 1875 the egg was left out and dipping bread into melted cheese and wine became de rigeur in the Alps. Unsurprisingly the Swiss Cheese Union aggressively marketed fondue to apres skiers - 'fondue creates a good mood' ‘have a jacuzzi fondue!’ (joke). And Swiss restauranteur Konrad Egli, took fondue to the extremes by inventing the chocolate fondue as a promotion for Toblerone chocolate.
