Artwork description:

The word mandala means “circle” in Sanskrit. Mandalas have spiritual and ritualistic signigance in Buddhism and Hinduism. They are used as spiritual tools in meditation practices, in creating a sacred space, and in focusing attention on aspirations for enlightenment. “Mandala” has become a generic term for any plan, chart or geometric pattern that represents the cosmos metaphysically or symbolically, a microcosm of the universe from the human perspective. These mandalas use the icon of the buddha cat and lotus ower. The cat represents the Buddha’s nature and the lotus ower represents enlightenment. Lotus owers rise out of the muck and above the material world. They are symbols of detatchment, of being grounded in this world but at the same time rising above it.
