Artwork description:

I live in the middle of the British countryside, by the edge of woodland. Each year, at around Easter the place suddenly bursts into life. The buds on the trees turn into fresh bright green leaves. Green shoots come up from the ground, and then slowly the blue appears. Intermittent dots at first and then, suddenly a carpet of blue and the heady perfume of the bluebells.

Every year I take thousands of photos and hope to turn this amazing force of nature into a print. Every year, I fail- until now!

Carpet of Bluebell's is a 16 colour reduction Linocut Print.A reduction linocut is a totally hand made print. No machines are used. Only one piece of Lino is used throughout the process and so no prints can be reproduced.

I draw the image I want to create on the Lino, in reverse. Using carving tools I take away all the lightest parts which will be the colour of the the paper, I then ink up the Lino with a colour and press this onto some thick printing paper. Anything I want to be that colour I carve away and ink up the next colour and so the process goes until the image appears.

This print went through this process 16 times, to achieve the final image. I used water based artist inks and the paper is Italian Fabriano Rosapina.

The printed area is approximately 20cm x30.5 cm and the paper size is approximately 36.6 x 20cm.

Please note, outside the U.K. and USA local customs/duty charges may be incurred. These are the responsibility of the customer and outside my control.

The 'in room' images are computer generated and not to scale.

Materials used:

lino, cutting tools, roller, inks, printing press, paper
