Original artwork description:

This one is truly one of a kind. I was on a painting trip out in the Arizona desert in 1991, when I stumbled across a red rock about the size of a Brazil nut. I wondered if I could make a mark with it. I scraped it across some paper and sure enough it made a red line. So I put it in my pocket and when I got to this location I drew this big rock formation with the rock I found nearby in the desert. Then I painted it in watercolor. So this painting is really "of the desert."

Painted en plein aire, on location out in the western deserts. I was thrilled with how the changing light changed the colors of the landscape. Luminous and magical. Vast and quiet.

From a painting trip out west in 1991. I sketched and painted my way across the deserts and canyons, making field studies for an eventual studio series of western landscape paintings. I am offering this piece, one of those field studies, for sale for the first time here on ArtFinder. Others will also be offered as time goes by :-)
