A digital image that is available as a giclée in an edition of 50. The Bar Tailed Godwit features in several of my prints: one of many endangered shorebirds that visit my coast, this bird travels all the way from Australia to Siberia and back every year, and holds the world record for non-stop flight. As a compulsive migrant myself, I have a lot of empathy for the Godwit, but its powers of endurance and navigational skills are way beyond my comprehension.
I am fascinated by the elaborate patterns that cover its powerful wings. I scanned a pen and ink drawing and played with its elements, to produce an image that evokes the memory of the enormous flocks of shorebirds that arrive on our coasts every year - but each year, their numbers are rapidly declining.
