This image was inspired by a need for lightness and freedom from worries. During the first year and a half of the Corona pandemic I so often felt weighed down by everything, as I'm sure we all did. So I created this image to be as light, bright, and uplifting as possible. The bright orange fills us with warmth and summer sunlight, and the light blue strip is folded up like a wing, with an intense, yellow underneath reflecting on the paper, like a sunbeam on the earth.

I think of my collages more as drawings because that’s how they begin. I draw with oil sticks, pastels and pencils on large sheets and then cut them down into various shapes which I recombine into new colour compositions. I don’t try to ‘make’ the shapes, but rather just start cutting and see what happens. The images are intuitive; they reflect my emotions and desires or are inspired by something in my surroundings.

Ultimately, what I’m after are the most stunningly beautiful, luminous, delicious colour combinations. I want to put colours together that fill your eyes with light; draw luscious, organic lines that make your mouth water, and create perfectly balanced compositions that feel like a light summer breeze flowing by.

This artwork is signed on the front and titled on the back (see photos).

The work is framed in a 40 cm x 40 cm white-glazed wooden frame. It is floated on a light grey museum-quality mat board: meaning it's fixed at the top with two archival paper tape hinges and is loose at the bottom, instead of being partially covered around the edges by a window mat. This allows the paper to stretch and shrink without buckling or tearing, adjusting to changes in ambient humidity.
