'Angel' is a large-scale painting of two delicately coloured blooms softly lit from the left. This is part of a body of floral work inspired by Spanish and Italian Baroque religious paintings. The dramatic use of light and dark applied to the floral structure evokes a spiritual pathos - simultaneously beautiful and anguished. Flowers are the ideal subject as they are in a state of decay from the moment of blooming. My work captures a glorious instant in that process.
