Late summer is the best time of year to visit the Mosel when the grapes are being harvested for the wine! Tourists love to visit the winefests here and to walk or cycle along the river banks. There is a real holiday feeling - everybody happily eating and drinking outdoors. This painting was painted in one of those touristy towns – the well-known wine producing village of Piesport. Looking across from my viewpoint on the riverbank in the old quarter of Piesport, the low sun cast shadows on the buildings and caught the roof of an imposing building with a tower. It was this skyline that I wanted to capture, with the sun shining on the bridge and water in the foreground. Behind the rooftops, on the very distant horizon, there is the high forest that takes over from the vineyards on the higher ground above the Mosel valley. “Afternoon Light, Piesport” is therefore an accurate portrait of part of this delightful village on a late summer afternoon at the Mosel.
“Afternoon light, Piesport” was painted on site at the Mosel in Germany on Hahnemühle 600g mould-made watercolour paper using Windsor and Newton paints. It comes mounted in a warm white mount to fit a frame size of 40x50cm and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
