Painted in 1947 by Lowry. The picture depicts the industrial mills right down to the river edge. The river could be the Irwell. The river divides the cities of Salford and Manchester. Queen Victoria opened the ship canal in 1894 and was set up to accommadate ocean going vessels to navigate their way from the Irish Sea into the industrial heart of Manchester.
