Encaustic on panel, this abstract geometric painting is part of my “Metamorphosis Series”, an exploration into the idea of transformation, using the life cycle of a butterfly as way to consider personal change.

The back ground is the natural birch a wood color, protected by a thin layer of clear wax.

Encaustic was a favored material of the artist, Jasper Johns, but dates back to 100-300 AD where it was used on Romano-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits. It is made from a combination of beeswax, pigment and resin, and the paint shows beautiful texture and depth in color.
