Glacial Boulder (2024) Original Oil Painting by Anthony Galati

40.64 x 30.48cm (unframed) / 40.64 x 30.48cm (actual image size)

$850

Years ago on a hike in Allamuchy State Park, a friend and I went much further out on the main trail than usual. I had seen an area where there were a lot of giant boulders that had been left there during the last ice age, when the glaciers had brought them to this area before melting. I remembered the boulders and decided that I wanted to find them again and do a painting. The boulder in the painting is actually the runt of the litter, but I liked it just the same.

I finished the majority of the painting on my second day of working plein air, not long before the leaves had all dropped, and got back to the entrance to the park just before the last shred of light had disappeared. I eventually reworked the boulder more recently in my studio to finally complete the painting to my satisfaction.

I chose to "oil out" the board before beginning this painting. This means wiping a thin layer of oil on the surface before applying any paint.

Materials used:

Oil paint on archival panel
