Art of the Day: "The Smoke That Thunders" by Paul J Best

Continuing my ' powerful places ' series of paintings. This painting draws on my memories of Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe. The Kalolo-Lozi people had their own name before Livingstone arrived, Mosi-oa-Tunya which translates as 'The smoke that thunders'. The noise of the Zambezi river tumbling with full force over the 350ft drop is the memory that really sticks. These are the largest waterfalls in the world.

This was the last stop on our month long trip through southern Africa taking in four countries and where the gearbox on the 4x4 Bedford finally gave up. I remember helping to rebuild it for the limp back to Harare airport using bearings that we made out of cutting up steel tent pegs.
