    Cast glass and bronze mural

    Cast glass and bronze mural

See the finished work! It's full of references and memories of Julia Barker, drawn from students and her colleagues' memories of her following her tragic death.... If you'd like a cast glass mural, then contact me please - I love making them! Just click on the 'commission' button here in Artfinder. I always agree a design before starting to make it. As a rough guide, these works are about £100 per square foot, and easy to mount (they're pre-fixed on wooden panels, ready to screw to the wall, indoors or out).

    Finished!

    Finished!

Well, I've finished the left-hand side. There's still the right-hand side to do, but that'll have to wait awhile as I catch up with other projects and hold my annual Open Studio (middle two weekends of June). It looks good! I'm very happy to undertake glass panel commissions like this, by the way! Any size, shape or subject, and remember I love a challenge! I quote for each commission individually, but the rough rule-of-thumb is £100 per square foot or £900 per square metre.

    Sticking each piece in place

    Sticking each piece in place

I use a reflective, flexible, weatherproof adhesive to hold everything exactly where in its place. Reflective, to bring up the colour; flexible, to accommodate the tiny differences in expansion and contraction rates in the finished panel. It has to last many years.

    Commemorations

    Commemorations

This plaque is a memorial... Julia's students have written their own memories and feelings in a book of rememberance. Some are to be included in the mosaic, fired into the glass. Here they are being positioned...

It's always exciting to open the kiln and see the transformation in the glass! These have been fired at 850°C, at which temperature the glass forms a nice smooth-edged puddle in the approximate shape of the cut glass.

    Day two...

    Day two...

Mosaic bed panels all marked up and weather-proofed (I soak them in PVA and fix a mesh to provide a grip for the glass). I've just started cutting glass now, as you can see. It's clear glass for now: I'll be staining it later.
