    Preparing for Hampshire Open Studio

This week has been very busy, I have been working on preparing paintings for Open Studios taking place next week over the August bank holiday. Main project has been to mount a number of watercolours, collages and tressages that have never been shown and frame three mono prints. All have been langushing in folders unloved and unseen! The display screen come early next week and the task of transforming the garage into a pop-up gallery commences.

    Varnishing

Applying a U.V resistant satin varnish to The Olive Grove. It's important to ensure that the surface is lightly covered in one direction. After drying if necessary I will add another layer at right angles to the first.

    Working on Long Hot Summer

Here I am putting the finishing touches to Long Hot Summer, using a mahlstick to support my brush hand. I like to stand and work at the easle, as it gives me a better perspective on how the work is developing.

    Thinking

    Thinking

I spend quite a lot of time thinking about what I am doing and scratching my head. I have a small studio in the garden ... small but perfectly formed! Unfortunatly I cannot keep many paintings in the studio or it gets to the stage of falling over them and not having enough room to move .

    working on a coloured ground

    working on a coloured ground

I like to paint on a coloured ground, it gives more depth to the composition. This is a Mars Violet ground, I also use black gesso regularly. I visited a Paul Klee exhibition at the Tate a few years ago and his geometric paintings were all on a black ground. somehow it gives the colours a vivid resonance.

    In the studio

    In the studio

Not exactly working, but standing about in the studio! I use sketches made on visits as basis for my work. I use A4 sketchbooks to make quick sketches of things which catch my eye, and generally take a digital image if I have camera with me, as colour reference. I prefer the sketches as they are a better record of what I have seen.

    Beginning a painting

    Beginning a painting

After preparatory work on a composition, putting the first mark on a bare canvas is very nerve wracking ! Until the first mark is made on the new canvas so much open space can be intimidating
