Autumn Showers linocut reduction, last color

The soft colors of November really comes through here, I deliberately tried to make it cheerful though, with November right out there, I thought, we don't need it to be too dreary ;o)) It's difficult to see in this photo, but the lower clouds have rain showers coming out of them....Only 10 print edition, very tricky print to do, so I have to say, I am happy with the result!

    Linocut reduction

how to make and print a linocut reduction. This film was made in my studio in Singapore 8 years ago, but is basically still how you do it. I have improved on my registration technique, the swearing bit of a reduction print ;o)) and I now print my linocuts on a Whelan Press, super press for linocuts as the roller moves, not the bed! anyway, hope you enjoy the film!

    rolling up a linocut

    rolling up a linocut

in this day of digital printing, I relish the fact that every single time I print, I connect with my image as printmaking is always hand inked, with a roller for the linocuts, and with dabbers for the etchings, you only print one print for a "ink-up", this does of course mean, that when a human hand is involved there are small variations in the colors. I don't agree with this being used an an excuse for sloppy work, but love the fact that it makes printmaking original art.

inking up an etching copper plate

inking up an etching copper plate

the art of inking a copper plate comes with lots of experience, i very often use 2 plates, the actual copper plate in one color, that I then over print with a second color. Or as in the case of the Freedom tree (as an example) I use several colors on the tree and the hills and then over print with the blue sky, to me, this adds depth to the image, and lovely color variations.

    carving linocuts

    carving linocuts

the actual carving of a linocut is like sculpting, a space where I am in the direct contact with my idea of an image and every cut counts, the direction of the cut, the depth of the cut...

    Printing etchings

I have 2 presses, my smaller press that I use mainly for etchings, and my larger press for bigger linocuts, this also makes it possible to invite other artists in to my studio to work, great and inspirational fun!
