  • Magic in Nature

    Magic in Nature

I've always been fascinated by shapes in nature - stripes on a zebra, shapes of snowflakes, waves in the ocean and so I love reading Ian Stewart's 'What Shape is a Snow Flake?' "These and other natural patterns have been recognized by scientists for centuries. What do they have in common? They can all be accounted for mathematically. Patterns can embrace chaos, fractals, dislocations, even statistical regularities, and are found in many things that at first seem irregular or featureless." But, at the end of the day it is all still magic in my mind!

    Never happier!

    Never happier!

I am never happier than when I am in my studio immersed in painting. Being creative feels like 'home' to me.

    Work in Progress

    Work in Progress

I work in layers and I let the paint tell me where to go next. This is a current work in progress, nearly complete. The trick is to know when to stop!

    Studio buddy

This is Tuft, she is my studio buddy. After a rough start in life, she is now living her best life and has me wrapped around her little paw!

    Wise Words

    Wise Words

Coming across this Bruce Lee quote years ago was hugely influential. I remember it was the first time I really thought about the philosophical side of water and started to make it my mission to understand the connections better. I guess that was the start of the fascination/obsession with water!

    World Snow Day

    World Snow Day

In recognition of World Snow Day on January 21st, I've looked through my archives and found a shot of me making my first attempt at painting a snowscape. I'm inspired by water in all its forms and snow and ice are no exception. Love the subtle shades of blue, grey, indigo, white.......

    So true!

    So true!

I find this quote from the late Georgia O'Keefe to be so true.

    Glass canvas

    Glass canvas

I love how over time the paint jars I re-use time and time again build up with colour, like little mini paintings in themselves.

    My painting buddy

    My painting buddy

This is the lovely Sky saying hello to one of my paintings. She used to sit in her basket purring whenever I took paint to canvas. Had to say good bye to her last month, feel like I have lost my painting buddy.

    The floor is my canvas!

    The floor is my canvas!

Not quite but I do create all my paintings on the floor. I can't remember how that came about but I can't imagine working in any other way.
