Yuki-onna is the Japanese spirit of snow who appears to those trapped in winter storms. Beautiful and tall, clothed in a white kimono and with the palest of skin and blue lips, she floats above the snow, leaving no prints. Her long black hair and terrifying eyes are often all that is seen. She can instantly disappear in a cloud of mist. Her icy breath turns weary travelers into frost-coated corpses. At times, she manifests holding a child. When a well-intentioned person takes the “child” from her, he or she is frozen in place. Yuki-onna can also invade homes, blowing in the door with a gust of wind to kill residents while they sleep.
This description, at first, may seem a little grim, but if we look at this as a metaphor for life we may see the relevance. The old saying “Don’t judge a book by its cover” comes to mind.
