I've always been absolutely mystified by the Juan de Pareja portrait, many of Rembrandt's self portrait's and Innocent X by Velazquez. One day I decided to try my hand at the pontiff and failed miserably. I was able to get close on the likeness. but did not capture the look and feel of the piece so I abandoned the piece and thought I threw it away at some point. Recently, I saw it in the garage tucked in a corner and decided to put it on the easel with some fresh eyes. Like many artists before me, to copy Rembrandt or Velazquez is futile and less than appetizing at best, but to rearrange or deconstruct made more sense for me to adopt as my goal. Diego used to clean his brushes on his paintings and I used to marvel at being that brave with his masterpieces and so, most of my marks are "cleaning the brush" gestures more than anything. This is canvas mounted on board.
