Artist's description:

The best known South African artists are white and still to this day black artists who worked under Apartheid are not celebrated. They worked in a situation of danger to themselves and their families since they were open to censorship, incarceration or worse.

Under situations of great duress to populations artists create work which speaks directly to those of their community. In normal times art does not have this immediacy. Black South African art retains to this day that connection to its people.
