Artist's description:

Every country in the world has one or more works of literature which are seen as seminal to its inhabitants. They are usually few in number. So it is with Portugal. Luis de Camoens is the national poet of that country through his work the Luciads. The work is in multiple stanza form and relates his life spent sailing with the ships which explored and created the first European colonials. Camoens' life was one of great hardship and he was not recognized in his lifetime for this great work.

Roy Campbell, a South African poet celebrates the poet in his poem, Luis de Camoens which closes with the following lines:

"Yet of his sorrows king
He shouldered high his voluntary cross
And taught his Gorgon destinies to sing."
