Artist's description:

This is a picture of a young woman sitting, minimally clothed, in bright sunshine, on a beach, looking at the sea. At this time, I had started thinking about using the materials of a place in a painting, so here the paint incorporates sand to a diminishing extent as the sea is reached. The subject was worked from a photograph taken in Portugal (Algarve), but I was unable to bring back a sample of material from this beach, so I have used sand from southern Brittany, of which I had a stock. The sea is something people look at for ages and here the focus on the figure with its head at the sea's edge emphasises the act of looking at the sea moving and changing. In some ways this is a classic holiday setting with bright primary colour, deep shadow, the shining surface of the woman's back and intense yellow sand forming a picture of blazing heat. Additionally, though, with about half the picture space devoted to sea without a horizon or other objects, the viewer is forced to contemplate the figure and her imagined thought over time in heat, light and stillness.
