On the NE corner of the island of Sanday in Orkney lies the tidal island of the Start, separated by a channel that floods from half tide onwards. At it's extreme Eastward end is a Stevenson lighthouse marking the Southern end of the passage through the North Ronaldsay Firth.
After a fortnight of extreme weather from the SE this gap is a maelstrom of broken water in which gulls and kittiwakes fight for tasty morsels dug up by the action of the waves...quite a scary place.
