Part of a collection of photographs by Scottish Artist Peter Gillies, taken while on an artistic research trip in Japan over a very snowy winter.
This shot is from a small area of forest which circles Ichiyasan 一夜山 Kamishiro, Nagano region in the Japanese Alps. So taken with the scenery the artist stayed in the small town for 2 months.
The level of snow that winter was nothing new for the area, but for the artist, this was an experience quite unlike anything he had encountered before and spent as much time as possible in the forest taking photographs. It was too cold to do any sketching as was the intended plan, almost too cold to operate the camera but the artist found himself in what he could only describe as the actual reality of his art so regardless of the freezing temperatures he walked the forests and delved into this dream world.
This particular shot was on a very heavy snow day, one of the best in the time he stayed in the area. The focus of attention in this section of forest was everything really, wildly heavy snowfall crashing down from the upper branches, yet moments later total silence the soft snow deadening the sound in the forest. An exciting moment to be in the forest as the artist explored the winter wonderland. The areas where the forest banked up the side of the hill were completely inaccessible as the snow drift was so deep, the untouched bank of snow was of particular interest with trees motionless and frozen.
The photograph is printed on high-quality gloss photographic paper and professionally framed in wood. The artist hand titles, numbers and signs by hand the photographs. This set of images at this size are limited edition of 20.
