Artist's description:

The prequel to Winter Feed

I was walking in the low morning sun to the village for breakfast, and I heard a quad bike coming up the steep hill. I quickly grabbed a shot of whatever was coming round the corner.

It turned out to be the shepherd and his partner on their way to feed some more sheep. The pillion partner is wrapped up against the freezing winter and the bike tows a trailer full of feed.

I am really please with this shot, it is cropped really tightly with the frame of walls and the shadow preceding the bike tightly framed. Look at the detail of the pillion and the bleached frozen sunlit landscape

It's minus 6C.......a hard frost.

The sheep need a supplement as there is no nourishment to be got from frozen pasture

A hard realistic photograph of the reality of farming on Dartmoor, inspired by the style of Sir Don McCullin our greatest living photographer
