Wild Things in the Woods is a large abstract painting measuring 121 x 121 x 3 cm.
Deep in the woods, shadows fall. Light is refracted through tree branches. Colours melt together, hiding detail and abstracting image. I become more aware of everything, I listen and here the whisper of the woods, I breathe deeply and smell the damp earth and fresh day, I touch moss and dead leaves, feeling their contrasting texture, one soft, one desiccated and crisp. There are creatures watching me, I feel their eyes upon me. I feel isolated yet exhilarated to be here, lost in the woods with the wild things.
When I walk my dogs in the woods I always feel a little apprehensive, I become another creature in the woods, aware of my existence and alert to predators. But in this apprehension there is an exhilaration to be alive, to witness the light cutting through the boughs of the trees, to see the plants straining to reach the light, to see the new life growing from the old. Wild Things in the Woods makes my heart beat faster and brings a new awareness of life to me.
This is my inspiration for painting Wild Things in the Woods. I wanted to capture a beautiful moment of light, scattered through trees but I also wanted the painting to have an edge. For this reason I used strong colours which were offset by dark shadows and strong light. I have used some colours which complement and then chosen highlights of colours which are jarring and risky to try to create the feeling of beauty but apprehension and awareness. Wild things in the woods is painted on high quality artist canvas stretched over a bespoke wooden frame. The boxed edges are painted black. This painting is ready to hang.
