This image came into existence while I traveled to Kruger National park in South Africa. I captured beautiful shots of the White rhino as it stood pondering along the savannah grasslands. I pictured many photos from various angles and chose the one which worked best.
I worked from my photograph and sketched out the outline of the white rhino onto a textured paper. Using my colored pencils I selected various greys, white and black to color the rhinos skin tones on the face. I captured the line work and shading details beautifully and made it stand out from the textured paper. I moved forward onto the rhinos body and applied the same shading like the face but toned down the grey slightly with dark shades of grey on parts of the body. The legs came along beautifully where I applied more darker shades of black with light grey to balance the depth of colors. Working with one tone of color makes the image flat hence I colored darker shades too. The proportions of the rhino made the image look perfect aligned together with the composition.
I finished of with bright natural greens on the ferns and plants combined with orange and yellow.
I loved this piece very much mostly the details on the face and body because it looked like it was coming out the page. It had great impact!
