Many people, including myself, consider horses to be the most empathic creatures in our world. That is the crux of the image “White Knight.”
I was shooting photographs of 500 horses being moved from winter to summer pastures. I was moving respectfully around this impressive herd. Suddenly I felt something or someone or something special directly behind me.
Camera ready, I quickly turned around to come only 10 to 15 feet away from this incredible white horse, looking at me and communicating his interest. In that instant I made this image, no camera adjustments, just this “decisive moment” that photographers talk about.
“White Knight” embodies to me all that is magnificent in our equine friends: grace, joy, strength, tenderness, and, of course, empathy. I felt very privileged that “White Knight” wanted to connect with me.
Photography is much more than just continuous clicks of the shutter and hoped you get something. The art and craft of making photographs is more about understanding what a moment really means and conveying that unique experience to others.
Each viewer knows that “White Knight” is looking directly at him or her. It is a reality that transcends place and time.
I am reminded of the opinion that we as humans are the stewards of the earth and as such, we are the guardians and caretakers of all the creatures which live here. But when I look at “White Knight,” I am confident that it is just the opposite: That animals are here instead to teach and guide us.
Please have fun looking at "White Knight;: He's enjoying watching you.
