The group of 6 birds are geese, its actually a picture I have produced from memory, the view is of the North Sea but the claggy mist means it could be any sea. I have tried to use the incredible uniqueness of watercolour here to give the moody, atmospheric feeling I was after. The combination of a limited palate of cool pale washes was used to contrast with the very dark outlines of the birds in flight. When I look at birds in flight I still have that sense of awe which I first experienced as a small boy and I wonder what it must be like to see the World as they do from up there. Ive entitled this work 'Where do they fly' because when I look at this painting I always think "where are they going"
