I'm currently working on a series of seagull paintings. In this one I wanted to capture the bird in flight, and the weight of their bodies as their wings lift them up.
Hate them or love them you can't beat the attitude of a seagull. Seagulls also bring the sea straight to you, and flashes of ice scream and chips from childhood, and the sounds of their call backed by the crashing of the waves.
"You do not ask a tame seagull why it needs to disappear from time to time toward the open sea. It goes, that's all."
Bernard Moitessier
Over the last four or five months life has changed considerably. With roads quieter and everyone at home suddenly birdsong seems to be everywhere. My studio is in the garden with bird-feeders outside the windows. I thought I would fill my lockdown by painting my companions in isolation. There is a great comfort in nature continuing oblivious to these strange times, busts of colour and life. I haven't, however, traveled to the sea for a while so thought it might be nice to bring the sea to me.
Artwork comes framed in a 75mm Bronze floral embossed (high pattern) wooden mold, ready to hang without glass. Oil paintings stay healthiest with air flow over the canvas surface, it also allows you to see the texture of the paint without reflection.
