This is the courtyard garden at the old hospital in Arles where Vincent van Gogh went for treatment in 1888. Th garden has been restored to how it was in Vincent's day and looked spectacular in the Spetember sunchsine when I visited in 2008.
I sat sketching and painting the scene for many hours and when I returned home created this composition from my drawings.
This painting is made using the drypoint method, an intaglio printmaking technique a bit like etching. I incise an image by hand into a polypropylene sheet and from this I make a print using vegetable based inks and an old fashioned etching press. I then tint the painting by hand with watercolour.
