This scene may be familiar to you. It's Vincent van Gogh's 'Cafe Terrace at Night' but a view from the other end of the terrace from where Vincent sat and painted. When I visited Arles I made a beeline for this place and made some sketches and paintings which I could work from when I returned home to create this composition.
This painting is made using the drypoint method, an intaglio printmaking technique a bit like etching. I incise an image by hand into a polypropylene sheet and from this I make a print using vegetable based inks and an old fashioned etching press. I then tint the painting by hand with watercolour.
