This work is one of a series of still life paintings inspired by objects and detritus found in and about the artist's studio. The covered and concealed object is a recurring motif in Alibone's work, suggesting an absence and a removal or abandonment of the subject, set adrift from the original contextual moorings so as to appear alienated and isolated in undefined and ambiguous space. Alibone presents images that are at once both familiar and strange, allowing innuendo and a heightened sense of drama to extend meaning beyond what is depicted. The work’s realism becomes a means to not only engage the potential of imagination, but to explore the potential for significance.
