Marissa Weatherhead has a wide and varied language in paint which emerges in different applications depending on the given subject. Her still life paintings take on an academic approach involving the assessment of colour, form, space and composition. Marissa’s recent bird portraits echo the style of Georgian figurative miniatures by using flat black shapes which Marissa has added pattern to with decorative floral motifs.
“The birds I draw and paint were originally inspired by those in my garden fluttering in and out of bushes or across the lawn. In some of my images I have used flowers and foliage to decorate their bodies, this comes from a visual association of feathers, petals and leaves, affirming birds within nature. For me they also have a spiritual association of love and joy."
