A mixed media painting using mainly oil pastels, my preferred media but also acrylic paint, pencil and conte crayon for the finishing touches. As a botanical illustrator by training I am still inspired but the flora I see. However I am now very interested in capturing the colours and textures I see rather than a faithful reproduction of the plant. This tree had grown with wonderful twists as it endeavored to find a way through the canopy into the sunlight. The textures within the bark were many and varied, sometimes deep cracks and other times flowing lines showing where the bark had flaked off. The actual colours of the branch were dark greens turning into blue then the reflected light through the leaves from the canopy shone on the bark. I used these colours as my starting point for my painting.
