Artist's description:

In the village where I lived there is a lovely, ancient terrace garden. It's typically Italian with fabulous lemon trees in antique terracotta vases and this aspect of an Italian garden has always fascinated me and given me great pleasure.

This particular garden is a little bit tricky, because it feels like an enclosed space, since the building La Grancia rises high above the terrace casting shadow and extreme areas of sunlight. But I love working there as it's so very quiet and peaceful with little possibility of disturbance.

With a large painting like this one, I usually start off by drawing it up on canvas, with preliminary painted marks, with also some rough drawings and notes and photographs. In this way, I have enough visual information and memory to continue working in the studio, away from the scene. I somehow have a much clearer idea of where I'm going with the painting using this method.
