I spent a year living in a magical neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York - specifically Forte Greene in 2011 - and I was constantly visually inspired by the place.
I encountered this family on the C-Train, going into Manhattan from Brooklyn on Mother's Day. They agreed to pose, the father cautious and protective. The little girl was wearing a tiara.
This painting is a mixed media work, with acrylic paint and pastels. I often paint my subjects in blue, because it seems to confound the question "what color are they?"
