A bright, bold and slightly haunting painting which holds it's space well and draws all eyes towards it. This piece was made during a project on 'Abuse'; the inspiration behind the piece is showing the entrapment of an abusive relationship. The victim feels trapped in a relationship which is slowly eating away at her/his soul and life, the abuser thrives off of the victims pain.
Although this painting is showing a very real and quite disturbing situation; I think it really shows strength too, bringing out of the dark such an unspoken and terrifying experience (that far too many people go through).... into the light. In my eyes this is winning, creating an awareness is what the abuser least wants.
I created this piece with a mix of watercolour and inks, using free and aggressive brush strokes also allowing the paint to drip and fall carelessly but maintaining a structure. This is my style; drippy paint which has a sense of realism and abstract. I worked in layers creating and building the figures, maintaining the bright inks and capturing the complete opposite of utter darkness.
The male figure in the corner is partly hidden as I feel this shows the hold the abuser has over the victim. Often people can not see the aggressive side of the abuser but they can see the effects on the victim slowly but surely.
I'm very passionate about this subject and think it needs more acknowledgement and help for those suffering or have suffered it.
