For this piece, I was inspired by long days, sat in a big old tractor with my own dog Hamish and husband at the wheel. Hamish can be a nervous dog at times, but he has never been happier than on a day out, riding high, looking out at the world. At the end of summer, when the days are still long, and the land is still lush and green. I often wonder what is going on in that head of his.
I used charcoal, chalk and soft pastels layered on top of watercolour and acrylic paint. I played with a putty rubber, removing sections of chalk under which the paint could peep through. This created the perfect textured for his fur, which would have been clogged with mud, dust and nature, in contrast to the simplistic fresh colours of the foliage ahead.
