Artist's description:

In an interview with Celine Gaurier-Joubert for The Discerner magazine one of the questions she asked was which musicians I feel closest to in terms of work. One of my answers was Tom Waits, so when Celine asked me to create a piece for the ‘It’s All About Piano’ Festival at the French Institute in London, I decided to use him as inspiration.

As I said in the interview I’m drawn to musicians who have compelling life stories. It’s easy to name many artists, writers, poets and musicians where drink has become as important in their mythology as their work. The romantic notion in the Arts that alcohol is a tool to unleash true creativity has endured, and it’s one I find fascinating.

In my work ‘Tom’ the figure sits between a piano and a bottle. Tom Waits makes no secret of his early alcoholism and it’s in this context he gave his thoughts about the nature of creativity.

He says:

”…one is never completely certain when you drink and do drugs whether the spirits that are moving through you are the spirits from the bottle or your own. And, at a certain point, you become afraid of the answer. That's one of the biggest things that keeps people from getting sober, they're afraid to find out that it was the liquor talking all along.”
