This painting forms part of a series which imitates the effect - if not always the conventions - of Classical mosaic in paint.
Three goddesses dance against a stylised Classical landscape. In this picture, I've brought out and contrasted the more naturalistic and more schematic possibilities of the mosaic technique, setting the goddesses in a middle ground between the real and the fantastic - a world in which they are themselves absorbed, physically present but emotionally remote. Wild movement coexists with balanced stasis - conveying something of the tension at the heart of the paganism from which they emerge.
The canvas is painted grey around the edges, suggesting a mosaic panel, and may be hung framed or unframed.
