I have long standing interest in place and sense of place, and as an academic, I have worked extensively on this topic.
This abstract piece of art emerged from my interest in sense of place, and how we create overlapping notions of cities and spaces, as we move through it and experience it at different times. These overlapping mental images shift and merge, and often begin to fade away over time. Research has shown that we capture images of places in forms of networks, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks. Some of these are consolidated over time, and become the essence of the city for us, while others are a distant memory. These memories run like fragile threads through the mental landscape.
This handmade one-off print in complementary bright colours is on smooth heavyweight cartridge paper, and the image size is 29 x21 cm (A4). It will fit a standard frame. I will mount this on a heavyweight black paper. And, I will sign it at the back. The paper is acid-free and resistant to ageing.
Using muted colours this piece also shows what 'muted' means to me. When the memories are muted and are shifting like transient images, we are trying to hold on to the threads that connect us to these distant memories.
The print is sent loose and unframed in a reinforced envelope with an attractive acid-free tissue wrapping and mount board backing from my studio 'Hedge and Hog' in the north-west of England.
