This painting is inspired by various stories and accounts of witches between the 15th and 18th century. I was starting to get a picture of the people who were considered witches and the nature of their beliefs.
This was a time when Christianity was spreading and many of the old gods and beliefs were misconceived. And that's really what I wanted this painting to be about - who is she and how is she perceived? I wanted to drop lots of little clues: the pendant around her neck, the herbs she's gathering, the cat at her side - they are all supposed to raise questions about who she is.
I tried to keep the colour palette limited to warm greens and earthy tones to suggest a connection with nature. Although not the focus of the painting, I realIy enjoyed painting the cat - I had a great model!
