Artwork description:

This painting was born from the desire to explore about the culture of Benin.
The central African country has the highest national average of twinning.

Interestingly whenever a twin dies, a wooden statue called "hohovi" is carved, within which the spirit of the dead child is placed. These figures are deified and treated almost exactly as the children*

I found this fascinating, as it spoke of parental loss but also the continuation of live within an inanimate object.

This is a young woman with her set of dead twins carried on her chest, in the temple of pythons.

The painting was done on watercolour paper, with a mixture of graphite, gouache, ink and oil sticks.

Materials used:

graphite, gouache, ink, oil stick
