Artist's description:

According to legend, the three Saint Marys - Mary Magdalene, Mary Salome and Mary of Clopas (versions vary) - arrived by boat at Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer in the Camargue after the crucifixion of Jesus. Saintes-Maries was once a pilgrimage-site, and statues of the saints are carried to the sea at their annual festival which involves a famous gathering of the French Roma. Artists, writers and musicians have been inspired by their visits to the festival.

The cult of the Three Marys way well derive from an older Celtic cult of the Three Mothers (Tres Matres). I've shown the three figures afloat in a moon-shaped boat against the blue of the Mediterranean sky and sea. The simplicity of the piece invites calm, meditation and space for your own thoughts.
