This has been inspired by the Hollywood Icon “Marilyn Monroe” of the Golden Age of Hollywood in classic photographic subway grate scene for film The Seven Year Itch (1955) in which her dress is blown upwards by a passing subway train in New York.
Marilyn is standing on a grate above a subway, gridded into squares, and represents a secret message in Binary Code. An infill square of either, Blue, Red or Yellow indicates a 1 in the Binary Code, such that from left to right it will display a Letter from the Alphabet, and forms two words. Inspired a chess board, gridded 8 by 8, compete against each other. Also, inspired by the Disco dance floor lights of the 1970s.
I have been inspired by simple outline drawings, in thick ink, with infill textures, and comic text, such as the work by Roy Lichtenstein, Michael Craig-Martin and Julian Opie, Angela Bulloch.
