I am always fascinated by how people behave in public, particularly when they do what are normally considered private activities. One year I went to the Green Man festival and as I was watching one of the acts I noticed this woman sitting and knitting. She knitted throughout the set and seemed to all the world as if she was at home, listening to the radio. I loved the contrast between the ultra-cool festival vibe and the traditional granny knows best craft of knitting.
This drawing uses a mix of media. For the transferred image I print out one of my digital photographs on an inkjet printer, place it face down onto a fine quality, heavyweight artpaper, soak the back in nail varnish remover and quickly pass it through an etching press. This pulls the pigments out of one paper and into the other, diffusing and mixing them as it does so. The effect throws up unexpected and sometimes spectacular combinations of colours. I then use fine point Faber Castell Pitt artists’ drawing pens for the line work.
